After the 2020 Census, there will be new boundaries defined for local, state, and Federal elections. Redistricting will happen in 2021 – and now is the time to reform the process.
Come learn how the game will be played, how your vote will be affected, and how you can shape the future. Deepen your knowledge about Virginia’s gerrymandering history, and enhance your effectiveness in reforming the current system.
In the past, election district boundaries were drawn to emphasize partisan bias and incumbent protection..
In 2011, the Democrats defined State Senate districts that tilted towards maintaining that party’s control of the State Senate. The Republicans defined boundaries for House of Delegate districts that tilted towards maintaining that party’s control of the House of Delegates. The “gerrymandering” balanced the partisan priorities, but communities were divided like sausage being sliced as the politicians chose their voters.
In 2021, it could be different. The General Assembly that starts meeting on January 9 will decide to advance or kill redistricting reform. The state legislature will consider an amendment to the state constitution that would create a less-partisan mechanism.
Free, non-partisan, and worth attending. Doors open at 7:00pm. After Brian Cannon speaks, there will be a showing of the documentary "GerryRIGGED: Turning Democracy On Its Head."
